Working together as a neighborhood group we have had accomplished quite a bit in the past four years. We started working together as a Neighborhood Association due to an influx of drug activity in our neighborhood. After working with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, we were able to remove almost all of the drug activity from our neighborhood community. By standing together and remaining aggressive in our neighborhood watch activities, we are able to report any and all suspicious activity when it begins to creep back into our neighborhood before it becomes a bigger issue. Below is a list of some of the other things we have worked on as an active Neighborhood Association:
- In 2007 we were able to begin enjoying new street lights along Wheeler Avenue, after the Harrison Township Board of Trustees designated Wheeler as a Street Lighting District.
- We have organized and held two block parties for all the residents along Wheeler Avenue. Our first block party was in 2007 to celebrate the new street lights and we held our second block party this past summer (2010).
- We have worked closely with the Harrison Township development staff in removing four blighted structures from our street. We have also passed along a list of vacant homes to Harrison Township for consideration in possible future demolitions.
- The Harrison Township Board of Trustees have declared 36 properties in the last four years a public nuisance as a result from our activity as a Neighborhood Association. Almost all of those properties were subsequently cleaned up by the Harrison Township Service Department.
- We conducted a neighborhood cleanup on an empty lot in the summer of 2010 in order to clean up debris which had been dumped illegally at the property.
- We petitioned the Montgomery County Engineers office to place a crosswalk at the corner of Wheeler and Salem Avenues.
- We also petitioned the Montgomery County Engineers office to remove a dead tree behind the sidewalk at the corner of Salem and Wheeler Avenues. Working with the Engineers Office (to remove the tree) and Harrison Township staff (to declare the property a nuisance) we were able to alleviate another dangerous condition from our neighborhood.
- We worked with RTA to address issues we had with the bus stop at the corner of Salem and Wheeler Avenues. We have also adopted this bus stop and remove the trash from the trashcan at this bus stop in order to keep this area clean of trash and debris.
- In 2011, with the assistance of Harrison Township, we saw two dilapidated homes on our street demolished. We also continue to assist the township in identifying nuisance properties in our area.
- In the beginning of 2012, our group worked with township staff to identify three additional properties which were subsequently declared dangerous by the Board of Trustees and will be part of the township's 2012 demolition project if the properties are not brought into compliance by the responsible property owners.
