Harrison Township staff is always looking for new and exciting partnerships and project opportunities through the Harrison Township community.  Being an urbanized community presents new and various challenges every day and township staff has traditionally been able to look at each challenge as a new opportunity to foster new partnerships as well as devise new initiatives which ultimately serve as positive endeavors for the Harrison Township community as a whole.

Below are some of these new and exciting projects which Harrison Township staff has been working on in the recent months.  Please take time to read a quick summary about some of the new projects and click on the link for more in-depth information about each project.

Project Neighborhood

In early 2009, township staff began working on a partnership with Ft. McKinley United Methodist Church on the corner of Siebenthaler and Salem Avenues.  Ft. McKinley U.M., a campus of Ginghamsburg United Methodist in Tipp City, Ohio, had recently made a commitment to the Ft. McKinley community to help transform the neighborhood to be “the best neighborhood in Montgomery County.”  Through many meetings and various endeavors, Harrison Township and Ft. McKinley staff began working on many different projects together in the hopes of redeveloping the Ft. McKinley community in a steady, more focused direction than previous efforts had allowed for.   Harrison Township has continued to keep this project alive by extending existing agreements with Ft. McKinley at the end of 2010 and signing a new agreement in March, 2011, which will result in the first "Community Garden" in Harrison Township.  Ft. McKinley UM conducted monthly clean ups throughout 2011, held a community festival and conducted several programs from the Michigan Fire Station location in addition to being a stakeholder in the Ft. McKinley redevelopment project.  Ft. McKinley UM is currently busy planning special events for the upcoming 2012 calendar year.

The American Carco Project

After a year of intense meetings and discussions with multiple jurisdictions, including Public Health, Ohio EPA, City of Dayton Water Department as well as Weston Environmental Solutions, Harrison Township compiled a complete plan of action for moving forward at the old American Caro site, located at 2800 Ontario Avenue.

In November of 2009, the Wellfield Fund Board awarded the township a grant for $779,180.  In the summer of 2010, Harrison Township also was awarded a $80,000 CDBG grant for this project from Montgomery County.  After signing our grant contract with Montgomery County in December, 2010, the township sent this project out to bid at the end of February, 2011.

The Neighborhood Stabilization Program

The NSP is another Stimulus Bill project which Harrison Township’s Development Department’s staff was able to take advantage of in 2009.  The NSP was designed to assist communities remove vacant and dilapidated homes from their existing neighborhoods.  Harrison Township was awarded a $75,000 grant to assist the department’s efforts in stabilizing some of our older neighborhoods in the township.  In early 2011, township staff received word that additional NSP funds were available to be used for additional residential demolitions.  Staff compiled a list of an additional 11 properties, in all three areas of the township, which will be completely demolished by the end of the 2011.

The Dairy Demolition Project

The former Dairy located at 3977 Salem Avenue has been a dilapidated industrial building at the entrance to the Ft. McKinley neighborhood for the past several decades.  In 2009, the Harrison Township Fire Department declared this property to be a dangerous property and Harrison Township was able to include this property in the NSP project.   On November 5th, 2010, Harrison Township Trustee Ronald Casey addressed the crowd at the dairy site prior to Evans Landscaping beginning the demolition of the former dairy building.

Parkway Inn Demolition Project

In 2009, Harrison Township staff was awarded a $150,000 grant from Montgomery County’s CDBG Fund Board in order to assist Harrison Township in the demolition efforts at the old Parkway Inn site.  The CDBG-R grant was a grant which was tied to the federal “Stimulus Bill.”  The Parkway Inn demolition project will consist of the demolition of the 13,120 square foot former hotel, known as “The Parkway Inn,” which is presently located at 2221 Wagner Ford Road.

Ome Gardens Sanitary/Sewer Project

In 2007 the Development Department was awarded $1,200,000 for the construction of new streets and storm sewer in the northern section of the Ome Gardens plat.  The Services Department has secured the remaining funds for this project and the bid went out for the project in early 2010.
